SONCAP CERTIFICATE
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has implemented a set of guidelines for exports to Nigeria called the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP).
The objective of the SONCAP is to ensure that regulated products imported into the country are in accordance with applicable Nigerian standards or by International/National standards.
The SONCAP procedure includes three routes of shipment certi cation. Exporters depending on whether they are traders or manufacturers and frequency of their shipment can choose the routes suitable for them.
The three routes are given below:
• RouteAForUnregistered/UnlicensedProducts-a Product Certi cate 1 (Unregistered/ Unlicensed Status) is issued with validity of six months
• RouteBForRegisteredProducts-aProductCerti cate 2 (Registered Status) is issued with validity of one year • RouteCForLicensedProducts-aProductCerti cate3
(Licensed Status) with validity of one year
The SONCAP Shipment Certi cation process includes two stages. The rst stage is obtaining a Product Certi cate (PC) for the regulated products and the second stage is obtaining the SONCAP Certi cate (SC) for the regulated products
shipments Exporters should apply for the PC when they wish to export a particular regulated product. This certi cate
will be issued after submission of all qualifying documents including test reports for the products to be included in the PC to the local Intertek O ces. Upon issuance of a PC 1, 2
or 3, a SC will be issued for the consignment following the diagram in the next page.
The SC issued by an Independent Accredited Firm (IAF) will be electronically transmitted to SON’s portal system for their reference. The SC is a mandatory document required
by the Nigerian Customs for clearance of the goods. The
SC con rms that the products comply with the relevant Nigerian technical regulations and approved International / Regional / National Standards. The authorities in Nigeria may take random samples from imported consignments to verify compliance.
